NATIONAL BUILDING CODE REGULATIONS:
The National Building Code Building Regulations are currently in place for all commercial properties.
The current regulations can be found at www.princeedwardisland.ca/buildingcoderegs. The Department has also produced a plain language version of key points in the Building Codes Act Regulations
The National Building Code is in effect for all commercial properties and January 1, 2021 for all non-commercial properties. Currently farm buildings are exempt and small sheds.
A development permit in the Resort Municipality is currently good for 16 months and if construction has commenced during that time the permit can remain in effect for 24 months. Under the new regulations, If a permit is issued by the municipality prior to the new regulations coming into effect for non-commercial properties on December 31, 2020 and you are a non-commercial property and are not under construction, you will be required to obtain a building permit from the province as well under the National Building Code before you can commence construction. Full enforcement of the National Building Code for non-commercial properties will be in effect by March 31, 2021.
